Free PDF Writer??

Postby raggedyann » Sat Jul 23, 2011 4:55 pm

Maybe someone here will know.

I downloaded GIMP, the free 'photoshop" and am slowly learning it. So I'm cautiously getting somewhere. Now I need a suggestion for a free PDF writer to substitute for Adobe Acrobat.

I'm broke, lol. Searched the interet, but don't know which one to choose. Any advice?

So, I assume you have Linux. You can create PDFs for free using some Word plugins. I always create a PDF in Word and then do Save as with this http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/de ... en&id=9943

I don't know Linux that well, but apparently you can set up a PDF converter for OpenOffice and LibraOffice (if you have one of those). I found this http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-create ... buntu.html

This is my favorite freeware site. I get everything I use from them. They have a few free PDF writers listed. Just seearch for "pdf writer" on the search bar.

If you only need to do some easy edits on pics, there is an online editor that is super simple and awesome. I use it to crop and resize. Have it on my bookmarks bar so I can get to it quicly when I'm writing and need a pic.

GIMP is a bitch to learn! I gave up on it. I have Paint Shop Pro 8.1, a very old version, but it does everything I need it to do. What exactly were you needing done?

OK, I really want Photoshop but cannot afford it right now. I want to design my own bookcovers for ebooks. So I'm learning gimp, but I'm slow. I have a few ebooks I am writing under a pen name that no one locally needs to know anything about. My YA ebook--a local guy did the cover for me and it was great--he did it on photoshop. I paid him but this other stuff I don't want anyone local to know about. I need to learn to do it myself. So that is the reason for gimp.

The pdf-acrobat clone is for the print version of my ebook, which is doing ok. I am using Create Space. If I understand correctly, I need to have it in this setup. I am not a technical person and do not claim to be, lol. I use MS for everything. I can convert the manuscript to PDF on Word, but is this acceptable to create space?

Forgive me if I sound stupid. I feel stupid, lol. If I could just write write write, I could churn out the stuff. I did the ebook completely on my own, loaded it, and it turned out okay on the Kindle and Nook. I have less hair than before I did it, but I did do it. Could I do it again? I guess so.

With the Create Space, there are all kinds of margin issues where the book folds etc. I am actually planning on retyping the manuscript. One book I'm reading suggests you set up an Adobe Acrobat 'shell,' save that and then use that 'shell' for all future books.

I thought about subscribing to the Adobe stuff but that is $65 - $95 a month. Funds for me are limited at this conjecture in my life.

I don't know a thing about ebooks, never did one. I don't know if I ever want to , actually. I'm not very motivated to succeed at anything. I just want to make enough to pay the bills. You can find a free PDF writer on that site, and maybe something for ebooks too. They have everything, and they test them first and tell you which ones are best.

I know what you mean about being financially strapped, though. I've been so depressed lately that I can't make myself write anything. It's killing my bank account. Every day I say I'm going to get up and do X number of articles, and every day I fail, which makes me more depressed. I really feel like I should give up and get a real job.

I use create space and have used http://www.pdf995.com/ for all the documents I've uploaded there, be it covers or ebooks. They do offer a license, but the free version is complete with no time limit. You just have to deal with an ad popping up every time you use it. Doesn't bother me. I just click past it to view the pdf. :)

Though I don't see why the pdfs you create through Word would be a problem. A pdf is a pdf, so I don't think Create Space cares how they are created. Of course that is only for documents you create on Word. Gimp would still need a universal program, which is pdf995.

Oh, and if you want a cheaper version of Photoshop, try Photoshop Deluxe. I think that cost me about $20 on ebay. I use it for all my covers.

Photoshop is hard to learn, too, but I heard GIMP is really hard. You can get free OO or Word plugins for exporting to PDF. My very very very FIRST online job was formatting a PDF for someone and I downloaded a pirated copy of Acrobat. Honestly, it sucks using that tool. It's so much easier to export from Word, so I would go that route if I were you.

I downloaded a torrent of Photoshop from isohunt. Isohunt got hit by the RIAA, so you have to proxy now to view a full list of software. If you want it, I can send it to you. You have to run a hack on it, which is a small executable. Took me two times to get it to work. The trick with the torrent photoshops is that you can't sign up for online support or anything like that. Adobe is slick, and they have some kind of online registration or support you sign up for during installation. If you choose yes, the install is screwed, so you have to do it again.

Anywho, photoshop is way too expensive, but there are torrents out there. You just need either a serial number or a keygen. Keygens are better, because you always get a unique key.

It used to be such a nice little P2P world, where you could get anything you wanted virus-free through P2P clients. The few P2P clients left are loaded down with viruses and spyware. Now it's torrents, and some of them are even bogus. I've given up downloading anything, just stick to the free stuff, which is just as good most times.

BTW, there used to be a version of GIMP that had the exact same GUI as Photoshop.

^ Yeah, I'm all for paying for software, but come on. I haven't looked at Photoshop prices in a while, but I'm sure it's STILL too expensive for me. lol That's when I pull out the torrents. I think $200 is my limit for paying for software. After that, it's torrents.

Photoshop is around $700 now.

http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-65048332-Ph ... 228&sr=8-5

I wouldn't pay that for any software! If somebody wanted me to use Photoshop, they better be shelling out the bucks for it!

My old Paint Shop Pro does everything I need it to do. I can create my headers and page images like dividers and backgrounds easy peasy on that. I can see where people who do graphic design for a living, or professional photographers, need Photoshop, but I don't. Hell, PSP was $70 way back in 2000 when I bought it, and it's only $25 for the new version now. The version I've got is selling for more than the new versions, because Corel fucked it up so bad, nobody wants it anymore.
