the north end of Topsail Island

This is what the north end looked like at high tide after spending 5 million dollars to rebuild the beach and dunes.

Just 6 months later (at high tide) the beach is already gone.

We had a nor'easter while we were here this month and now nothing is left. This picture isn't even at high tide. The police have been stopping people from going up there at high tide now so I'm assuming the road and everything is under water. We were told 2 people were in the cottages during that storm and had to call to be rescued.

They've been trying for over 20 years to stabilize the north end. This is what used to be the third row of cottages. And the town of North Topsail said that since it wasn't a named storm there isn't much they will do to help them out this time (right now the town has 8 years to pay off 11 million from things they have tried in the past). They had a town meeting and it appears they will be putting 12 foot sand bags out at the owners expense. Depending on your frontage it will cost the owners between $60,000 and $80,000 each if they want to get sand bags. They should just go ahead and condemn the 15 or so homes but the town doesn't want to do that yet because as soon as they are condemned the insurance companies will immediately drop them. It's time for those people to just accept the fact that they can't stop the ocean and walk away. But even if you walk away you are still responsible for removing the home. They can't be allowed to just fall into the ocean because decks and pieces of homes will be washed away and hit other stairs/decks and cause damage to other places.
